eGuardian Parent Bill of Rights
When you enroll your child in eGuardian, you expect us to provide rigorous, reliable protection while he or she is on the Internet at eGuardian-protected sites. At eGuardian and our partner sites, we take this responsibility very seriously.
The eGuardian Parent Bill of Rights outlines our commitment to you and your family, and explains how we can work together to ensure that your child or children can receive the best possible protection on the Internet.
As an eGuardian-enrolled parent, you have the right to:
- Safeguard your personal information. The information you provide to us, including your name, address, your child's name and birth date, will be kept confidential. eGuardian will not sell, rent, lend or disclose this information to anyone (except under subpoena or to local authorities to aid in the locating of your missing child).
- Know what information is released. We provide our partners with your child's age, gender and geographic location (either state or Zip code). Under certain circumstances, and with your approval, we may also provide information about your child's school for partners that work at the school level.
- Know how your information is used. We only provide information to partners to help safeguard your child while he or she is on their site. Partner sites may use the non-identifying information provided to better target and serve ads while your child is on their site.
- Know that your information is protected. We employ the highest standards of security to ensure that your information is safe from hackers and Internet attacks.
- Effective levels of protection for your child on eGuardian-protected sites. On our partner sites, the following protection is provided:
- Your child will not be able to have natural-language conversations with non-eGuardian protected children.
- Your child will not be shown adult-oriented content.
- Your child will not be shown adult-oriented advertising.
- Be protected on our partner search engines. eGuardian partner search engines will automatically filter content for your child's age group.
- Add adults you trust to your child's communication preferences. These trusted adults may communicate only with your child, and not with other eGuardian children.
- Know which sites are protected by eGuardian, and which ones are not. We will keep you aware of our new partner sites. Protected sites carry the "protected by eGuardian" logo and trademark.
- Expect eGuardian to work with partners to maintain a comprehensive process of active security. While no protection system can ever be completely secure, eGuardian offers the highest level of protection available for children today. You can expect eGuardian to achieve high standards of protection at all times, and to work with partners to maintain that level of certification.
- Be notified when and if a site is no longer eGuardian-protected.
- Receive additional rights when you enroll in any eGuardian-protected sites. These protections will be explained by each of our partners, as they vary from site to site.
- A refund, if you are not satisfied with eGuardian within 60 days of activation.
Safeguarding your child online is a team effort. As a parent, and as a member of the eGuardian community, you and your child also have certain responsibilities to ensure a safe Internet experience.
- Parents should notify eGuardian of any significant changes in their child's profile, including a change of school.
- Parents must maintain an active email on file with eGuardian. We will contact your email on a regular basis to ensure the account is valid. This helps us to maintain an active security process.
- Parents must let their child know the standards of conduct expected of them on the Internet. eGuardian creates a protected environment for a child that is free from predators and adult content. But as good netizens, eGuardian children are expected not to participate in cyber-bullying, unwanted or abusive conversations or conduct not generally accepted in public areas. Online abuse can result in having an eGuardian membership revoked.
- Parents need to acknowledge that eGuardian protection extends only to eGuardian-protected sites. Non-eGuardian sites may not afford protection against predators and adult content, and parents should exercise proper care at these sites.
- Parents must agree to safeguard eGuardian logins and passwords to prevent abuse.
- Parents and children are asked to report any misconduct or abuse by other eGuardian members.
- Parents should avail themselves of the educational and support materials on protecting children provided by eGuardian, its partners and other expert authorities.
